25th March 2013:
I’ve been a bit lazy with updates for my blog. So toady’s the last day of the tip and I’m posting this from Udaipur.
On the 22nd of March after spending two days in Sasan Gir it was time for us to head to Jamnagar, our fourth city. We started early around 9am and visited Deviliya enroute to Jamnagar. I dropped my earlier plan of doing the coastal trip via Somnath, Porbandar, Dwarka and then Jamnagar as I did’t want to do a canon ball run and wanted to take it easy while doing this coastal route and give time at each place I stop and take it in. The route we took on this day was Sasan Gir- Deviliya- Malkana- Junagarh- thru City- Jetpur- Goandal- Rajkot- Paddhari- Dhrol- Dhunav- Jamnagar. We arrived in Jamnagar at approx 10 mins to 3 PM.
After spending a day in Jamnagar on the 24th of March Sunday we stated our journey to our last halt Udaipur. Again I avoided going to Zainabad as it had become quite hot during the day time, and personally I having witnessed the heat in the RANN a couple of time as a Rally Marshall, I didn’t want the kids and wife to experience it at time time of the year. I decided that we would be doing the Little and Great Raan later this year, maybe during the Dussara or Diwali break. The route taken during this day was pretty straight forward. Starting from Jamnagar at 930 AM the route we took was Jamnagar- Dhrol- Paddhari- Rajkot- Chotila- Syala- Limbdi- Bhagdora- Bavla- Ahmedabad (lunch break at Subway)- Gandhinagar- Himmatnagar- Udaipur (630PM).
After staying for a day in Udaipur, tomorrow morning we would be starting our final leg of the journey and heading to Delhi. The plan is to start early from Udaipur and be back home by 7pm ish.
Thats all for now. Thanks to all for taking the time for going through and keeping a tab on my updates.
PS these are just on the road updates, and I would surely be penning down a detailed travelogue once with pictures, road distances, places visited once I’m back home.
20th March 2013
We started the day today on a very easy note. Got up lazily in the morning and checked out of the Hotel Hoka at approx 11am after having a scrumptious breakfast. We had seen the rest of Diu (actually nothing much to see as it’s quite a small town and all the places to visit are in the same vicinity) except the Diu Fort, yesterday itself, so we thought that we’ll visit The Diu Fort in the morning and then make a start for Gir, contrary to our earlier plan of halting at Diu for another day.
So we were at the Fort before 12 and spent a good 90 mins here. Thank god we didn’t miss this place. This should be on the itinerary of anyone who visits the beautiful town of Diu. Will be sharing pictures of the Fort when I’m back home. We again went back to the hotel to get packed sandwiches for the kids, and by the time we started for Gir it was 10 minutes to 2PM.
We took the most direct route to SASAN GIR and covered 98 Kms in about 90 mins.
The routes we took was through Tad, Dolasa, Kodinar (bypass), Prachi, Madhopur, Talala, Sasan Gir & Balchel. Our Guest House is in this small village near Sasan Gir.
It’s more of a home stay facility than a proper hotel property. It’s 1 Km inside the jungle and last time I was at this place I could hear the Lions roaring during the night, it was a wonderful experience. The guy who owns this property is the sarpanch of this village and stays here with his family. Extremely warm and always ready to help. Though I’m coming here only for the second time, I feel like I was meeting a very old friend when I met him today. He owns a very big parcel of land here and is traditionally a farmer.
We guys are planning to take a walk around his farm later during the evening and Will be here for 2 nights during which we will be taking 2 jungle safaris and 1 safari in the Deviliya Park . Thereafter headed for Jamnagar on the 22nd. Haven’t finalized as yet what route we’ll be taking. All options open as of now.
Will keep you guys updated on the progress.
Cheers for now.
Though I’ve taken most of the pictures from my dSLR, I managed to take some of them from my phone as well. So here I’m sharing them. The quality of these pictures isn’t that good but still they give a idea about the places we’ve been.
Kanoria Lake, Ahmedabad
Himalaya Mall, Ahmedabad. This was next to our hotel Ginger Hotel, Ahmedabad
Another pic at the Himalaya Mall
My vehicle parked at the parking of the Ginger Hotel, Ahmedabad
Adalaj_Ni_Vav at Adalaj, Gandhinagar
Indoria Dinosaur Park, Gandhinagar
Grilled Fish at Apna Hotel, Diu
Nagoa Beach, Diu
While we were in Ahmedabad we visited several places and missed visiting some of them so would be doing those left out in our next trip.
Places we visited were Gandhi Asharam, DASTAN the Car Musuem, Kanoria Lake,. These were done on the 16th and then on 17th we visited Adalaj ne Vav and the Indoria Dyno Park and then finally Vishala for dinner and snacks.
Drive from Ahmedabad to Diu
The the morning of 18th, we were up and ready and on the road at 8am.we drove through Bopal, Bavla, Bagodara, Lothal(didn’t halt here), Fedra, Pipali, Dholera, Adhelei and from here we took a right turn towards Velavadar. We were at Velavadar at 10AM and spent a good 2 hours at this place covering a total distance of approx 160am (this includes the to and fro to Velavadar and drop ve inside the park). At 1154am we started our final leg for the day’s destination Diu.
Again joining the the main highway at Adhelei we reached Diu at 1710 Hrs crossing Nari, Vartej, Sihor, Songadh, Sanosara, Ranghola, Dhasha, Chavand, Lathi, Amreli (took the bypass), Chalala, Dhari, Timberwal Forest check post, Tulsishyam, Una & finally at Diu.
The total distance during the day was a little over 453Kms and took approx a little more that 9 hours including 2hours of stoppage at Velavadar.
The roads are mostly good leaving aside 18 Kms which traverses through the Gir Forest and is ridden with hundreds of speed breakers and mix of good to very bad roads. The rest of the complete stretch from Bhagdora onwards is single road but good. I maintained a driving speed of 85 to 95 Kmph, though I could nave easily done more but this is the speed that I maintain when travelling with family. Also the roads for a 1/2 a Km around Lathi is bad but under construction, so there’s hope there.
Initially I’d planned to stay in Diu for 2 nights but have decided to extend it by 1 night. Will be canceling my stay in Zainabad and leave that for a later time. She is another item gets added to the bucket list.
Will be uploading ng some pics later today in a separate post.
Cheers for now.

On the road update.
Trip report DAY1 DEL-AHD :
Started early from Delhi and we’re on the road at 430am. There was a lot of truck traffic even when leaving Delhi early morning. And most of them drive as if they own the road using all the three lanes of nh8. It was like this all the way up the end of the Jaipur Bypass and wee were there at approx 830ish.Then from the Kishangarh Expressway it was a smooth sailing all the way up AHD. We went through the City of Udaipur and didn’t take the bypass as I ready somewhere that it has the tendency to clogup and I had to fuel up too. Left the City of Udaipur at approx 330PM and we’re at our hotel at 730PM. Took a right from the Chilodia Circle and reached Hotel Ginger driving via Gandhinagar. Once we reached AHD traffic was heavy but nothing that shouldn’t be expected of a big city in peak hours. Had to stop a couple of time as my son was not well. For the entire journey drove between 80 to 95 Kmph and never going above 100 during the entire journey.
Had an awesome dinner at Goverdhan Thal, more so we were very hungry and this was nearest to the hotel. However I believe that they’re loosing their touch and usp. The quality of service has really gone down over the past 3years since I’ve been visiting this outlet on what I’ve experienced.
The hotel Ginger was a mixed 1st impression. Staying here for 2
more nights so will reserve my judgement till the end of the stay.

Its March again and time for another Road Trip or Driving Holidays as my family now calls it. Last year we went to Goa and the year before that it was Gir & Diu.
Well this year we’ve decided to add a couple of destinations to the March 2011’’s plan and including Gir & Diu we would be visiting and exploring the city of Gandhinagar, Ahmedabad, Diu, Gir, Porbandar, Okha, Chorwad, Jamnagar, Zainabad and Udaipur.
PHEW!!! that’s a lot many destinations, ain’t it. Well the way we think that we are not hell bent upon covering all the places or limiting ourselves just to these destinations. If some or any of the destinations are left behind we do put them in our bucket list for future trip. These trips that we take are quite laid back and we try and succeed to make them enjoyable at the least.
The plan or this year is that we drive one day, take rest the next day and then again drive the day after that. This way we avoid canon ball runs and at the same time get to see the local sites at the cities that we visit.
The total driving distance on Google Maps for this planned trip is a little more than 3500 Kms but I reckon that it might be a couple of ‘00 kms more as I plan drive through the Little Raan of Kutch starting from Palasava and ending at Zainabad. For this I really have to thank my friends Tanveer and Harsh Vardhan who have shared with me their GPS Tracks of the cross country driving they did on the RAAN. But as I said earlier, I am not bent upon covering everything. If anything’s missed, it goes securely in The Bucket List for the next time.
Enclosing here is the brief overview of the trip that we’re proposing to undertake.
So all in all most of the think are planned. For hotel we have booked rooms just at Ahmedabad and for the rest of the trip have spoken to some of the hotels in the cities that I plan to visit. So it would be mostly walkin’s only. Being off-season I don’t hope that we should have any major issues in scouting for hotel room at this time of the year.
Well that’s it. Cheers for now
I would be starting my road trip tomorrow and broadly the planned night stays for the trip are as follows
Delhi- Jaipur- Ahmedabad- Mumbai- Goa- Tarkarli- Mumbai- Udaipur- Delhi
I’ve made confirmed booking at the following places
Hotel Amer View, Jaipur
Karnavati Club, Ahmedabad
Ramada Carvela Beach Resort, Varca, South Goa
In Tarkarli I would be scouting for a Hotel or a guest house when I get there and same would be for Udaipur.
I would sincerely like to thank HV Kumar of HV Kumar – Fan, Forum & Message Board and all the members of the above FB Group who have been really helpful in providing me the detailed road book and help me plan this adventure right from the start. Thanks a lot sir(s).
As always I would be driving my Toyota Landcruiser on this trip and by the looks of it the total trip would work out to be over 4200 Kms. I plan to be back by the 27th or 28th of March 2012. Many people may ask why Goa and some of them may even ask why by road especially when air tickets are available little over of what I may spend on fuel costs. Well I’ve always been travelling by air since long and a package deal just doesn’t cut for me anymore and I feel that the adventure is missing in such a thing. Additionally I feel that if someone wants to see the real India, it can only be done when we are on ground. I am not against air travel but I feel that its more fun like this. Last year I did Delhi- Sasan Gir- Diu- Delhi and enjoyed every bit of it. Here’s the link to that https://harjeevchadha.wordpress.com/2011/11/25/delhi-ahmedabad-sasan-gir-diu-udaipur-delhi-road-trip-summary/
The following is just a broad guide to the route that I plan to take and it may differ from the actual route, especially the in/ and out of Mumbai and from Goa- Tarkarli- Mumbai from the route that’s been depicted in the following link. This link is just to give a broad overview on the route. Once I’ve completed the trip, I would be sharing the triplogs and GPX tracks for the entire trip.
